We don't think collectively and yet we have governments and take collective actions every single day. Was the decision to adopt GDP taken collectively? I don't think so. For me, to say "we don't think collectively" is an excuse to not take initiative and action and simply accept things as they are. I am not going back to discuss one specific case. There are enormous different possibilities, not all countries work the same, not all societies work the same, not all democracies work the same. I love discussing but I love engaging in discussions that can take practical takes and shape how we live. For me, to discuss and keep theoretical on "we, not all think the same thus we can't decide on what is best because that wouldn't respect all" when we, in fact, live every day with social agreements is mental masturbation. Life is lived in practice, and even when we don't take decisions to change we are by default taking decisions to remain the same. To not change and keep things as they are is seen as peaceful, but it is also keeping the status quo, current power structures, and oppression. Nothing is forever. Impermanence is the only constant. We have changed our system many times before and will change it again. If not because we want to, then because of new technologies and external events such as epidemics will force us to. We are constantly complying with changes and decisions others have taken for us. Regardless, the work of creating new narratives always remains. If we do not create our own narratives, we will live the narratives that others who have taken initiative have created for us. We change to adapt and get better and will change the upcoming system again when it is time. Look how far we have come as a species. As Martin Luther King Jr beautifully said, “Love is identified with a resignation of power and power with a denial of love. What is needed is a realization that power without love is reckless and abusive and that love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power is at its best love implementing the demands of justice. Justice at its best is love correcting everything that stands against love.” Power is the ability to act, to have courage. Many have grown used to looking down on it, but it is an energy that is needed. When we keep discussing for perfect solutions that will work for every single case we act out of an anemic love and never act. If whatever comes does not work, power will make sure it changes again. Leadership is important. It takes seeing the forest for the trees. Life is a constant dance, better danced when power and love walk hand-in-hand. Have a good weekend, John.
